5 out of 5 stars Great Notebook from Sony   May 20, 2010

This Sony Vaio Notebook (VPCF117FX/B) has everything you want: I7 processor, 6 GB Ram, 500 GB 7200rpm SATA drive, Blu-ray reader/DVD writer, and Windows 7 Home Premium.

The main reason I purchased this particular notebook was for the HDMI output. The LCD screen has a resolution of 1920x1080p - and the HDMI output can send out full 1080p as well to an external display (plasma/LCD TV/projector). Both displays can be run at full resolution at the same time. This allows me to hook up this notebook to my home theater for reviewing photographs, playing music with stunning visualizations, and playing DVDs and Blu-rays. Seeing my photographs projected on a big screen at full 1080p resolution is quite breathtaking. Other notebook computers claim to support HDMI out - but you have to be careful, especially if the native resolution of the notebook is not 1920x1080p. I wanted a notebook computer that can display exactly 1920x1080 with no scaling or cropping, and this Sony allows me to do this. Just plug in the HDMI cable, and it works. And even though I'm running my external HDMI cable through a couple of HDMI switches, I have no issues seeing the image on my plasma or projector. (The external display can also be set to 720p or 768p - but when you set this, the notebook screen also changes resolution to match.)

Some other features: illuminated keyboard, self-adjusting brightness on the LCD screen, Bluetooth, Wireless b/g/n. (I've only tested b and g so far - and I have not tested the Bluetooth features at all.)

The notebook comes with Norton Internet Security - which I deleted in favor of the friendly and free version of AVG. There's also a 60 day trial of MS Office 2007. Also included is WinDVD allowing you to play DVDs and Blu-rays. I was not able to test Blu-ray audio over HDMI, as my receiver cannot decode it, but Sony says audio is supported over HDMI. The Blu-ray image is, of course, marvelous.

Sony recommends that you make recovery DVD-R's (not included) right away when you get this notebook, because in addition to the Windows Home Premium OS, Sony has installed special drivers and 99 percent of the notebook product documentation on the hard disk. If you reinstall the OS using normal Microsoft installation discs, you will not get the Sony drivers or the Sony documentation - but this software is available through Sony's web site. However, if you re-install the OS from the Sony recovery DVD-Rs - you should get back all of the Sony add-on software. (Note: Sony's recovery DVD-R's should not be confused with the Windows Recovery Disk - which is something else a user should make while setting up the notebook. The Sony recovery DVD-R's are made using a Sony program.)

A couple of other things: The touchpad is a bit twitchy - with the cursor mysteriously warping to other places on the screen unexpectedly. To remedy this, I disabled tapping, and reduced the cursor acceleration somewhat. Tapping is the feature where a tap on the touchpad is the same as a mouse-click. Even after these adjustments, the cursor still warps occasionally, but it's not as bad. Also, some users in other review forums have complained of loud fan noise and an annoying buzzing sound, but I have not experienced either of these issues. The sound from the notebook is not objectionable as far as I'm concerned. Finally, there is no USB 3.0 - which is a bummer. I suspect USB 3.0 will be standard on every new notebook in the next 6 to 9 months - and it is unfortunate that the Sony does not support it. However, I did not consider the lack of USB 3.0 to be a deal-breaker.

All in all, this is a great product and I highly recommend it. It's very fast, the screen looks great. The look and feel is very polished. And you can plug it into your expensive home theater and have it working instantly at full 1080p with no scaling or cropping issues. This feature alone makes the Sony a standout product.
